In the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, aired in 2005, the guest list of supermodels was prestigious and impressive. The show rocks! Annually, Victoria's Secret also stages a fashion show that is televised later in the year. The show is generally held in the New York Armory on Lexington Avenue, and attracts hundreds of celebrities and entertainers. In the past, most of the clothing exhibited was not available to the general public, but in 2005 the show was specifically redesigned to feature clothing available to the general public through the catalogue. It's alive and kicking and has the most gorgeous women in the sexiest lingerie, some of which is so see-through, they might as well be naked. It's a show where the impossible standards of beauty are met, making unreal fantasies possible. The models are beautiful, each in their own special way, the makeup is flawless, each step they take brings men closer to the television screen, and their beauty gives them a power unlike any other. The best restaurants put these lovelies center stage to show them off, so other customers can watch them push their food around as they pose with pouty good looks. Designers fight amongst themselves to use these heavenly bodies as advertisements for clothing, jewelry, and, of course, accessories. The pay isn't bad, either. A top model can earn up to $50000 for a day's shoot. Linda Evangelista's famous comment on model renumeration? 'I don't get out of bed for less than $10000.' If the photos from a shoot are used in multiple forms of advertising during the course of a full year, a model's take for that day's work could be $500,000. Others have opportunity handed to them on a silver platter. Look at Janice Dickinson. She has her own show, as does Tyra Banks. Tyra says her body is so sexy, her role as a supermodel is to be less erotic. She vows she'll never show all of her skin, disappointing all of her fans. But, they still flock to watch her strut her stuff. There's another side to models that isn't so pretty; although we don't hear as much about that as we'd like. It's the darker side, about the purging, the inability to eat a complete meal. Drug use runs rampant amongst super models. In 2005, one of the British tabloids published shocking photos of Kate Moss snorting a fat line of cocaine during a debauched drug and drink session with junkie lover Pete Doherty. No one knows for sure if the famous catwalk queen is a practised user; but, we're betting her weight stays model slender. Ten times on the cover of Vogue has her as a top earning model, so it's not as if she can't afford the buy. Being a model means fending off lecherous millionaires, sitting for hours and hours as their faces are made up, clothing is fitted just so. Their diets consist of air and purging, so they stay at impossible weights. A few pounds can mean the difference between the cover of Glamour Magazine and unemployment. Models are constantly drinking champagne and resorting to drugs to stay bone thin. They suffer from anorexia and bulemia and the pressures are immense. Aging is a fear amongst all of the top supermodels. The most expensive plastic surgeon's can retire on some of the procedures performed to keep a model young. Crow's feet can mean death of a career. Starmakers are constantly on the look out for a model who is also photogenic. If she can act, her value goes up. Cameo appearances are a must for every film and we watch the super models try to act; and, even if they can't, no one seems to care, as long as they take off their clothes or wear the sexiest, the sheerest, the barest of clothing to appease the fans. Many of the famous models become demanding and spoiled. When it comes to assault with a telecommunication weapon, Russell Crowe has nothing on Naomi Campbell. Last Monday, the day before she appeared in court to face charges of assaulting a maid with a cell phone, the British-born supermodel was sued by another maid for allegedly attacking her. Note to future housekeepers considering employment with Campbell: Carefully read the medical plan. Actually, there is little reason to give Campbell the benefit of the doubt. According to her criminal record at eonline.com, Campbell was accused by yet another maid of assault in 2004, while in 2003 she was sued by a former assistant for allegedly hitting her and tossing a telephone at her. She also pleaded guilty to hitting a personal assistant on the head twice with a phone in 2000. Danish supermodel May Andersen was arrested after allegedly becoming unruly and striking a flight attendant on a plane from Amsterdam to Miami, police said. She was examined for alcohol and substance abuse at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital and later transported to the Miami-Dade County Jail. Whether it's a temper tantrum or demands for a bigger suite, more money, drugs, or a certain designer's clothing line, super models live in a rarified atmosphere. Since they are not like us, they have their own society, their own rules; and, all it takes is that distant, sexy look, a pout, and the natural intimidation that goes along with all things beautiful.
